Preparing for the Ijaza Examination
Preparing for Ijaza exam – requirements, assessment and preparation strategy
What Examiners Look For
An Ijaza examination is a complete recitation of the Quran (or assigned portions) before a qualified examiner. The sheikh listens for correct application of all Tajwid rules with consistent quality throughout.
Common Examination Requirements
Recite any surah or verse the examiner points to – on-demand, from memory
Explain the Tajwid rule applied at any point when asked
Demonstrate awareness of waqf and ibtidaa
Consistent application of makhaarij and sifaat throughout
Preparation Strategy
Recite the entire Quran to your teacher at least 3 times without significant errors before attempting the formal exam
Identify your weak surahs and drill them until they match your strong ones
Practise being tested on random verses – not just sequential recitation
After Receiving Your Ijaza
Receiving an Ijaza is not the end – it's a responsibility. Begin teaching students to continue the chain of transmission.
