How to Use the Color-coded Quran
Color-coded Quran guide – colour system, rules and how to study
What is the Color-coded Quran?
The color-coded Quran (also called the Tajweed Quran or Rainbow Quran) uses different colours to highlight different Tajwid rules directly in the text of the Quran, making it easier to identify where to apply rules as you recite.
The Color System
Red (أحمر): Ghunnah – nasal nasalisation, 2 beats
Green (أخضر): Madd – prolongation of 4–6 beats
Blue (أزرق): Qalqalah – echo/bounce letters (ق ط ب ج د)
Orange/Yellow: Natural madd (2 beats)
Purple: Silent letters / connected hamzah
How to Study with It
Learn what each colour represents before using the mushaf
When you see a colour, consciously apply the corresponding rule
Eventually, you should know the rules without needing the colours as a cue
The colour-coded Quran is a learning tool – the goal is to internalise the rules so you can recite correctly from any standard mushaf.
