Qalqalah: The Echo Letters in Tajwid
Tajwid Qalqalah – echo letters, sughra vs kubra and colour coding
What is Qalqalah?
Qalqalah (قَلْقَلَة) means "disturbance" or "echo." It is a bouncing or echoing quality applied to five letters when they carry a sukoon (no vowel): ق ط ب ج د. The colour-coded Quran typically highlights these in blue.
Two Levels of Qalqalah
Qalqalah Sughra (صغرى – minor): When the qalqalah letter has sukoon in the middle of a word. The echo is light. Example: يَقْطَعُون
Qalqalah Kubra (كبرى – major): When the qalqalah letter falls at the end of a word with waqf. The echo is strong. Example: stopping on فَلَقٍ
How to Produce Qalqalah
After stopping the airflow for the letter (it's a shiddah letter), briefly release the tongue/lips with a tiny neutral vowel sound. The degree of echo is light for sughra and more pronounced for kubra.
Common Mistake
Many reciters produce qalqalah even when the letter has a vowel. Qalqalah only applies when the letter has sukoon.
