Waqf and Ibtidaa: Stopping and Starting Rules
Tajwid Waqf and Ibtidaa – stopping and starting rules in Quran recitation
What is Waqf?
Waqf (وقف) means stopping at the end of a word during recitation. Ibtidaa (ابتداء) is resuming recitation after a stop. Correct waqf is essential for preserving meaning – incorrect stopping can drastically change or corrupt the intended message.
Types of Waqf Signs in the Mushaf
م (Waqf Laazim – obligatory stop): Stopping here is required; continuing changes the meaning
ط (Waqf Mutlaq – absolute stop): Best to stop here
ج (Waqf Jaaiz – permissible): Stopping or continuing is equally acceptable
ز (Waqf Mujawwaz): Permissible but continuing is preferred
لا (No stop): Do not stop here; continuing is required
∴ ∵ (Mu'aanaqah): Stop at one of these two places but not both
