Common Tajwid mistakes – top 10 errors and how to correct them
Why Mistakes Happen
Most Tajwid mistakes come from mother-tongue interference, insufficient study of makhaarij, or memorising words without knowing their rules. Identifying your specific errors is the first step to improvement.
The Top 10 Mistakes
Replacing ع (Ain) with hamzah: These are completely different makhaarij
Mispronouncing ض (Daad): Should be produced with the side of the tongue, not the tip
Missing ghunnah: Forgetting nasalisation in idghaam and ikhfaa situations
Incorrect madd lengths: Stretching natural madd too long or cutting obligatory madd short
Confusing ح (Ha) and ه (Ha): Different throat positions
Tafkheem on non-elevated letters: Not every letter is heavy
Skipping hamzah al-wasl: The connecting hamzah at the start of words is not always pronounced
Incorrect waqf (stopping): Stopping in the middle of a meaning unit changes the meaning
Adding vowels to sukoon: Letters with sukoon must have no vowel sound
Rushing: Reciting too fast prevents correct application of rules
