IB DP: Extended Essay and TOK
IB DP – Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and DP core requirements
The Diploma Programme Core
Beyond six subject groups, all IB DP students complete the Core: Extended Essay (EE), Theory of Knowledge (TOK), and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS). Together these develop research, critical thinking and personal growth.
The Extended Essay
4,000-word independent research essay in a chosen subject
Graded A–E; contributes up to 3 bonus points combined with TOK
Requires a supervisor, reflection sessions (RPPF), and a viva voce
Theory of Knowledge
TOK is a philosophy-of-knowledge course. Students explore how we know what we know across different Areas of Knowledge (Natural Sciences, Mathematics, History, Ethics, etc.) and Ways of Knowing (reason, intuition, emotion, language).
Top Tips for the EE
Choose a specific, focused research question – not too broad
Use primary and secondary sources
Start early: the EE takes 40 hours of independent work
