ACT Science: Data Representation
ACT Science – data representation, graph reading and test strategy
What is Data Representation?
Data Representation questions make up about 38% of the ACT Science section. They present graphs, tables, and charts and ask you to read, interpret, and draw conclusions from the data.
Step-by-Step Approach
Read the axis labels and units carefully before answering
Identify trends: as X increases, does Y increase, decrease, or stay the same?
Use the data – don't use outside knowledge (the ACT tests data reading, not memorised facts)
Common Graph Types
Line graphs – show trends over time or changing conditions
Bar graphs – compare discrete categories
Scatter plots – show correlation between two variables
Tables – compare multiple variables simultaneously
Speed Tip
In the ACT Science section, spend 5 minutes on reading/data passages and 8 minutes on conflicting viewpoints passages. Do NOT read the passages first if you're short on time – go straight to the questions.
