ACT Reading – prose fiction strategy, question types and analysis tips
The Prose Fiction Passage
Every ACT Reading test includes one prose fiction passage (a novel or short story excerpt). Many students find this the most subjective section, but with the right strategy, it becomes manageable.
Reading Strategy
Read the blurb before the passage for context
Pay attention to character names and their relationships
Note shifts in tone or mood as the narrative progresses
Underline lines that reveal character motivation
Question Types
Detail questions: Find directly stated information – re-read the relevant lines
Inference questions: What does the passage suggest? Look for clues in word choice
Characterisation: What does a character's action reveal about their personality?
