GED Mathematical Reasoning: Tips and Practice
GED Mathematical Reasoning – key topics, calculator use and test strategies
GED Math Overview
The GED Mathematical Reasoning test has two parts: Part 1 (no calculator, 5 questions) and Part 2 (calculator allowed, remaining questions). A TI-30XS MultiView calculator is built into the test interface.
High-Priority Topics
Basic operations with integers, fractions, and decimals
Ratios, proportions, and percentages
Linear equations and graphing
Geometry: area, perimeter, volume of common shapes
Algebraic expressions and polynomial operations
Extended Thinking Questions
Some GED Math questions are multi-step word problems that require setting up equations from real-world scenarios. Practice translating words into equations: "three more than twice a number" = 2n + 3.
Test-Taking Strategy
Don't leave any question blank – there's no penalty for wrong answers. Use the process of elimination on multiple-choice questions. For fill-in-the-blank questions, estimate first before computing.
