المَخْرَج هو موضع خروج الحرف الذي يتميّز به عن غيره. تتوزّع حروف العربية على خمسة مخارج عامّة تنبثق منها سبعة عشر مخرجًا خاصًّا، وهو مذهب الجمهور الذي عليه العمل في رواية حفص عن عاصم.A makhraj is the precise point where a letter is produced — what sets it apart from every other. The Arabic letters fall across five general regions, from which seventeen specific points branch out: the model of the majority of scholars, followed in the Hafs recitation.

اللسان Tongue

أوسع المخارج: عشرة مخارج تتدرّج من أقصى اللسان (ق، ك) إلى طرفه، وفيه تفرّد الضاد بحافّة اللسان.The widest region: ten points from the back of the tongue (qaf, kaf) to its tip — and the dad, unique to the tongue’s edge.

مخرج الغُنّة في أعلى الأنف، ويظهر في النون والميم حال إدغامهما وإخفائهما وتشديدهما.The point of nasalization (ghunnah) at the top of the nose, in nun and mim during merging, concealment, and gemination.

ضبط المخارج هو الأساس الأوّل لإتقان التلاوة؛ فبه يتميّز الحرف عن قريبه (كالتمييز بين الحاء والهاء، أو السين والصاد)، وعليه تُبنى الصفات من الجهر والهمس والإطباق والاستعلاء. والطريقة العمليّة لمعرفة مخرج الحرف أن يُسكَّن الحرف أو يُشدَّد ويُدخَل عليه همزة وصل، فحيث ينقطع الصوت يكون المخرج، نحو: «اَءْ، اَبْ، اَعْ».Mastering the articulation points is the first foundation of accurate recitation. It distinguishes a letter from its near neighbour — haa from haa, sin from sad — and on it rest the letter’s characteristics: voicing, whispering, and emphasis. The practical test for locating a makhraj is to make the letter silent (or doubled) and precede it with a connecting hamza; the point where the sound stops is the articulation point.

ملاحظة علميّةA scholarly note

ما سبق هو مذهب الجمهور (سبعة عشر مخرجًا) الذي اعتمده ابن الجزري وعليه العمل في رواية حفص. وثمّة مذهبان آخران: مذهب سيبويه (ستة عشر مخرجًا، بإسقاط الجوف)، ومذهب الفرّاء ومن وافقه (أربعة عشر مخرجًا).The above is the majority view (seventeen points), adopted by Ibn al-Jazari and followed in the Hafs recitation. Two other views exist: that of Sibawayh (sixteen points, omitting the oral cavity), and that of al-Farra and those who agreed with him (fourteen points).
